ABOUT US

ABOUT US

Julia and Bryce Flaherty are the owners and operators of Olathea Creek Vineyard & Winery. They were both born and raised in the Quad Cities and graduated from Bettendorf High School. Bryce earned his bachelor’s degree in business and biology from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD. Julia attended the University of Iowa and earned her BBA in economics and marketing, and then later her MBA.

Their love of wine started with a simple gift. Julia received a winemaking starter kit for Christmas and has not looked back since. She liked experimenting with different grapes, fruits, and flowers to create unique and delicious wines. She enjoyed being able to share the wines she had created with her family and friends. Along with gaining experience winemaking at home, Julia and Bryce continued their education by taking wine production and vineyard management classes. After winemaking for about five years, they thought it would be fun to turn their hobby into a family business. They will tell you, “We didn’t quite know what we were getting into at the time, but we are loving this new adventure and the opportunity to share what we love with the community”.

our story

The name “Olathea Creek Vineyard & Winery” comes from the history of the land. The vineyard was once the campsite for the Sauk and Fox tribes. The term "olethe" in Fox means beautiful. Beautiful is the perfect adjective to describe the property. The property features a picturesque creek and provides a quiet, country setting along the majestic Mississippi River. The name also pays homage to the former Olathea Golf Course which operated on the site for 30 years.

VINEYARD

VINEYARD

With the help of their family and friends, Julia and Bryce hand planted the first 2 acres of their vineyard in May of 2019. There are currently two varieties of grapes planted in the vineyard. About 80% of the vines are Petite Pearl vines and 20% are L’Acadie Blanc vines. L’Acadie Blanc is a white wine grape with origins in Canada. This is a vine that is relatively new in the US. Petite Pearl is a red wine grape developed in Minnesota by viticulturist, Tom Plocher.

This vine is also relatively new, first offered commercially in 2010.  Olathea Creek Vineyard and Winery is excited to be one of the few Iowa wineries to be making wine with both of these new varieties.
